Peg Kelsey Cornwell '79 helps those who want to help others in the
region. Project director for the St. Lawrence Leadership Academy,
Cornwell is also the advisor for the University's chapter of Omicron
Delta Kappa, the national service fraternity. Under her direction, the
chapter has won several prestigious awards in recent years.
"My job is great," she says. "I connect with students
wherever they are, and I help them make things better as they want
to." The major goals of the Leadership Academy include strengthening
student organizations and bringing better programs to all students.
Through her work, Cornwell strives to unite the initiatives of different
student groups and campus resources.
She points out that a key aspect of leadership is voluntary service. "We
work closely with the David Garner Center for Collegiate Volunteerism on
campus, because it is important to provide students opportunities
to practice the skills they're acquiring and to engage in leadership
development," she says.
The leadership academy makes a special effort to reach out to first-year
students to get them connected with other student organizations on
campus. The volunteer center coordinates community and campus
service projects as well as alternative spring break experiences.
