Track coach Mike Howard '87 is always on the run.
A standout on the St. Lawrence cross country and track
and field teams as an undergraduate, Howard wears a number of
hats in the athletic department, as well as in the Canton community.
He is the director of men's and women's cross country and track and
field, and he is also associate athletic director, overseeing NCAA
Division III compliance and scheduling for the majority of the 32
intercollegiate athletic teams fielded at St. Lawrence.
The 1996, 1998 and 2000 United States Track Coaches Association
NCAA Division III Cross Country District Coach of the Year, Howard
was the 1996, '97 and '98 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association
(UCAA) cross country Coach of the Year and earned Coach of the Year
honors in New York State for track and field in 1993, '94, '96, '97,
'98 and '99. He was recently elected president of the New York State
Collegiate Track and Field Conference which oversees the state meets
in cross country and indoor and outdoor track.
Howard also played a major role in the design of both the Merrick-Pinkard outdoor
track and field complex and the Newell Field House indoor track
and field complex, which are among the best facilities at any level
in the nation. And, if all that hasn't kept him busy enough, he coaches
youth soccer and ice hockey in his spare time and is president of the
Canton Central School Board.
