Whether it's organizing a bicycle relay to alert state lawmakers or making an award-winning video, Nigel Fellman Greene '09, of Medfield, MA, does more than just talk about environmental concerns; he lives them.
President of the
SLU Coalition on Climate Change, Fellman Greene won the national "Hot Spot" video contest sponsored by the League of Conservation Voters in the summer of 2007. The 30-second video he made was sent to presidential candidates, and as a winner, he was sent to the New York Live Earth concert in New York in July.
Fellman Greene shot his 30-second video spot at St. Lawrence's
Canaras Conference Center in the Adirondacks and posted it on the video-sharing site YouTube. The contest called for videos to convince presidential candidates to make global warming a priority in their campaigns, and eventually, in their administration.
A
biology major, Fellman Greene participated in the
Adirondack Semester and is a member of the campus chapter of Democracy Matters. In the fall,
he helped organize a "Green Torch Relay," in which students from colleges across the state bicycled to Albany, the New York State capital, to alert policy makers to plans for
Focus the Nation, a national discussion on climate change taking place in January of 2008, including events on the University campus.
Only half-joking, he comments, "It took a lot of legwork by Coalition on Climate Change members to contact enough bikers from other schools to come together for the relay, but the effort was worth it. The group of more than 25 bikers pedaled over 200 miles collectively over 14 hours to raise awareness on climate change. It was a very exciting way to show our commitment to the climate movement and the Focus the Nation event in particular. I felt proud to have been a part of the relay, and to have made such a powerful invitation to all of the politicians we contacted in Albany."
