Carly Fraysier ’08

Carly Fraysier ’08 knew she had found her niche when she joined the SLU Outing Club (OC) as one of only three female members in 2006. “My St. Lawrence experience has been defined by the Outing Club. And that is no understatement!” exclaimed Fraysier.

Fraysier said she knew about the OC even before joining the St. Lawrence community. “I knew that I would probably be interested in a lot of what they do,” she added.  “I’ve never been a one-sport/one-activity type of person. I like lots of outdoor activities, but I like variety.”

Fraysier was vice president of the OC, the second oldest outing club in the country, in 2007.  Traditions such as Peak Weekend, on which the club attempts to place members on the tops of all 46 Adirondack peaks over 4,000 fee high, are what make the OC unique, according to Fraysier.

“The best part of living in the OC theme house for me is the opportunities it has afforded me,” explained Fraysier. “The funding St. Lawrence provides has made so many outdoor experiences possible for me.”

Fraysier, who studied in Kenya on St. Lawrence’s semester program there in 2006, has lived in the “Outhouse,” as its residents affectionately call their home on campus, for four semesters. She is one of 24 residents, including eight women.  Fraysier says she hopes that more people will become “more active in the trips we lead, more involved in what we do on campus and off.”

She added, “There is an incredible group of people living in the house. It’s a really fun and important community.”

Fraysier, a graduate of Spaulding High School in Barre, Vt., is an environmental studies-English combined major.  She is also the teaching assistant for a writing course, leads Outdoor Program trips and plays intramural sports at St. Lawrence.
