Lisa Francey ’92 grew up in nearby Lisbon, NY, a very small
town near the larger village of Canton. After establishing her chiropractic
practice in New York City, she decided to return to Canton in 2001
because, she says, "I longed to be where my presence could make
a difference."
A speech and theatre major at St. Lawrence, Francey says
she was always interested in living in New York. After earning her
teaching certificate and teaching English in Syracuse, she moved
to New York to work in advertising, but later found her true calling,
health and fitness. She worked as a personal trainer and fitness
instructor, and earned her Doctorate of Chiropractic from New York
Chiropractic College. She established her practice in New York City
and was in New York on September 11, 2001. Francey spent time at
Ground Zero giving chiropractic care to rescue workers. "I tried
hard to stick it out," she says, eventually deciding she was "ready
to live somewhere where life is simple, where you can pay attention
to the values and day-to-day things that are important to you."
Her re-connection to the local area goes beyond her office practice.
Francey sponsors St. Lawrence students as interns in her Canton office,
and also teaches classes in the University's Stafford Fitness Center. "I
see St. Lawrence faculty, students, and community members in my classes," she
says.
