Canton native and head women's hockey coach Paul
Flanagan did not want a change of scenery when deciding
where to go to college. He spent so much of his youth in Appleton Arena. But
Flanagan '80, M'92 decided to study and play hockey at St. Lawrence,
and began his professional career as an assistant men's hockey
coach. He held that post for 11 seasons, helping to coach the team
to ECACHL championships in 1989 and 1992 and the NCAA tournament
in 1989, 1992 and 1999.
Flanagan then took over as head coach of the women's hockey team,
the third person to hold the job in the program's history. He has
coached the team to four NCAA Frozen Fours, including back-to-back
trips in 2004, 2005 and 2006. In the 2005-2006 season, the
team set a new record for wins in a season with 31, and had two players
named All Americans by the American Hockey Coaches Association. Flanagan
was also named a top-six finalist for the Division I NCAA Coach
of the Year Award; he was the winner of the award in
2001.
