A
familiar voice at coffeehouses, museums, schools and libraries throughout
New York State, Berggren '71 sings about the area that he and St.
Lawrence call home, preserving its
cultural heritage in the process.
A professor of audio/radio production and programming at SUNY Fredonia,
Dan Berggren '71 was born in Brooklyn but moved to the Adirondack
region when he was 12. A sociology major at St. Lawrence,
he says that his experiences at the University influenced him in
his careers as both a professor and as a folk singer: he worked at
the student radio station; was a member of the debate team, the Laurentian
Singers and a dramatics group; and combined his many interests
into a final project for an English class that involved a
recording of original poetry.
He's recorded and produced 10 albums for his independent label,
Sleeping Giant Records, and is a frequent performer throughout the
region. Berggren was awarded an Alumni
Citation by St. Lawrence,
and has also received the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching
at SUNY Fredonia and the Art and Literary award from the New York
State Outdoor Education Association.
