Canton Summer Hot Spots

As the students wrap up their spring finals and seniors begin to work on their “Must Do Before I Graduate” bucket lists, those of us that are yearlong Canton residents are getting excited for Canton Summer Hot Spots.  Canton Summer Hot Spots are businesses, restaurants, or special venues that draw extra attention in the summer months! Below are four hot spots I am most excited about!

The Internship Scramble

Applying for an internship or competitive summer job is like steamrolling your life into short sentences, tattooing those to cover letters, resumes, essays and writing samples, shrink-wrapping it all into an email and waiting, hung from your toes, until someone catches you with a fish hook.  Short answer: internship applications are confusing.  And painful.

Farewell Rope Swing

It’s the third week in August, colored leaves and pumpkins are bumping popsicles and sparklers from the seasonal aisle at Price Chopper, and the St. Lawrence campus is finally filling up. Our football team moved in for pre-season last week; Residence Life met on campus this Monday; Orientation Leaders started their own orientation yesterday, and Pre-Orientation Trip leaders welcome our first freshmen tomorrow!

The Problem with Blueberries

The Admissions office, I learned quickly this summer, is as busy smiling, hand shaking and tour-guiding on Saturdays as it is through the week. But each Saturday we work, lucky us, earns one possibility-filled weekday off. Walking endless circles along the campus tour route so close to the actual North Country outdoors has left me itching to do some exploring. And each of my days off is another awesome chance.

Summer Away from SLU

While I’m right here on campus for my internship this summer, hundreds of my fellow Saints are employed or volunteering in all corners of the country and world right now. Part of my work for Admissions includes updating a newsletter for one of our counselors, and for this I’ve found and interviewed five students whose summer activities are especially exciting or meaningful. Not all these students found their summer work through St. Lawrence, but all credit their academic and life education here for preparing them to enter the real-world workforce. If only for a summer just now.

Fun in the Sun

It's currently 90 degrees in Canton, but the weather channel is telling me it feels like 104... and I agree. Luckily our Intern Headquarters, aka the FishBowl, is air conditioned so we're nice and cool when we are returning from tours and today's lunch date with President Fox at Dana Dining Hall. While walking back from lunch my fellow interns were chatting about possible options to cool down and escape the heat this afternoon after work. It gave me an idea for this weeks topic. So, whether it's a scorching day in July, or the surprise heat wave that often hits in the beginning of April, St. Lawrence students have found plenty of fun for under the sun.

Hello from Me

Hi! I’m Molly, and I’m thrilled to be starting this blog from a mostly-sunny summer at St. Lawrence. I’d tell you my nickname, since there are two of us Molly’s blogging this year, but nothing’s stuck yet save Mulan (an interesting variation of MoLunn…hm) and you’re welcome to help me out there while I introduce you to my life.

This summer I’m an intern with the Admissions office. For the whole glorious summer.

Highs and Lows of the Week

This is a great time of year for a few reasons, here are the highs of the week...

  1. World Cup is starting
  2. Students are arriving back on campus
  3. The Expendables Conference- and biking 90 miles there, 90 miles back
  4. The NYS Cycling Championships are this weekend

Oh the places I have been

Well it has been a busy couple weeks for sure!  Currently I am sitting here in Scranton, PA at the lovely Courtyard as I am on my way back from college fairs in Philly.   Meet with some really great students, talked to a few parents, and chatted with fellow admission counselors I have not seen in a while.  The only downfall was sitting in the gym in a full suit while the avg temp was somewhere in the 90's.
