Alumni to the Rescue

Winter seems to have dropped responsibility for the weather this week, so while I’m slipping or sloshing around campus I’m thinking of other things, too. Finishing my first feature-length film script, for one. Editing 30 papers for the intro to politics class I’m mentoring. Condensing the first half of my sustainability class at hockey rival Clarkson into 1000 to 1500 words. Finding a dress for my spring Kappa Delta Sigma social this weekend. Trying to remember where I put Susan Merrell '83’s gold eagle-embossed business card after our informational interview yesterday.

Note to self: invest in a rolodex-type device that scans, alphabetizes by industry and stores forever all of the millions of business cards I’ve collected in my almost 4 years at SLU. Not millions, maybe, but over a handful of cards have made their way into the bottoms of my purses, pockets and drawers since I discovered how willing our alumni network is to dole out career advice. And small cardboard cards.

Homecoming Weekend

Another week come and gone already and Thanksgiving is fast approaching.  It seems crazy to think that the semester is going to be over before we know it!  This weekend was homecoming weekend, and all the St. Lawrence alumni were welcomed back to campus, from those who had graduated just last year, and those who had graduated over twenty years ago!  SLU kicked off the weekend with a homecoming pep-rally, which was followed up by a hockey game versus Union.  Unfortunately, the game didn't go the way all of us Laurentians had hoped, resulting in a 2-0 loss.

Washington D.C.

A summer that has had me traveling all over Western Europe to study the European Union, has also finally brought me to our nation's capital to celebrate Independence Day. The journey began Thursday at two o'clock in the afternoon, When Abid (one of my fellow interns) and I hoped in my car to make the 8 ½ hour road trip to DC. We arrived at the hostel at quarter to eleven, fifteen minutes before they closed for the night (Close!!).  We were offered a free night if we stayed on the couches in the lounge because they overbooked that night, and as any self respecting college student would we took the deal. After checking in we headed down to Capitol Hill to see my future place of work.
