Back to School!

St. Lawrence University

Greetings!! This is my first official blog entry! I can't believe that another summer is over and we have returned to the beautiful North Country. I was happy to return to school and friends after being gone for the spring semester studying abroad in Kenya. I spent the summer in Maine working in a hut system through the western mountains. I was welcomed once again for my second semester of living in the Greenhouse located on Park Street. Living here our goal is to live as sustainably as possible while educating this lifestyle to the St. Lawrence Campus. This semester we are part of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) with Birdsfoot Farm. Every member of the house will work on their farm and pay them a small amount of money. In return we receive two shares from them every week with all the fresh produce we need. We cook meals at our house Sunday-Thursday and have five guests from the community come join us for these meals every night.

I finished the first week of classes very successfully enjoying all of my new classes. These include Mycology, Genetics, Global Studies, and Religion and Visual Culture. We had five successful dinners at the house; my friend Rachael and I are cook partners for Tuesday nights. Since the weather over the weekend was more beautiful than the weather I saw the entire summer I had to enjoy it outside! Friday afternoonI rode my bike to a local swimming hole with five of my friends, and enjoyed the afternoon swimming in the river. That night, in honor of the full moon, a few of my friends and I hiked up Mt. Azure, a small mountain nearby. The moon was so bright we barely needed to use our headlamps! The view was beautiful, and the night was a perfect temperature. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect experience on my first weekend back on campus. Saturday was equally as beautiful so I decided to travel to Lampson Falls, a local swimming spot. I spent the afternoon with some friends swimming and enjoying the warm weather. That night we put on a dinner party for a friends birthday eating tons of localand delicious food!

It is now time forme to finish up some homework and complete my abroad application that is due on September 10th. The first week of school proved to be extremely enjoyable starting classes, catching up with friends, and revisiting some of my favorite places near campus! Enjoy the day,

Katie

Message from an alum

Hi Katie- I'm an alum from the class of '75 and a member of the St. Lawrence Alumni Executive Counsel. I like to keep track of the blogs the students generate, as it gives me an idea of what life is like for students these days. It sounds like you had an enjoyable first weekend - we used to hit a swimming hole over in Pyrites, I wonder if the student still swim there...Thanks for helping us stay informed, and I hope you have a great year in the North Country! Best regards - Rob Donovan '75
