The Midwesterner
St. Lawrence University
Good Morning Everyone!
I know it is a little early for enthusiasm (8:30 AM on a Monday) but this is my first official Blog Entry! My name is Haley Bowman and I am... gasp... a senior at St. Lawrence University. I am still waiting for the reality of that statement to hit me. I'm sure my appointment with Career Services next week will be a harrowing reminder ☺! I am from Kansas City, Missouri and an English Literature major.
You are most likely wondering how a high school senior from Kansas City found her way to SLU. Flash back four years and a few odd months; I was a confused senior searching for colleges in all the wrong places. I looked at big schools and then I looked at even bigger schools. I searched high and low but nothing seemed to fit. I became Goldilocks of the college admissions process. Nothing I found was just right. Thanks to my younger brother I had grown up around hockey. St. Lawrence was first mentioned to me due to their Division One Men and Women’s hockey teams. After watching the men’s team play a game on ESPNU my mom suggested that I apply. I ignored her whim without giving it a second thought. What could the North Country hold for me? My first semester of senior year flew by and still no college met my every expectation. My mom had jumped on the SLU bandwagon and asked me time and time again to apply. After a few more, not so subtle, hints about a decreased allowance if that last College Application was not mailed I finally wrote to St. Lawrence. A few months later I was accepted (YAY!) and went to visit campus for the first time. This is when the stars aligned and my final decision set in stone. As I toured campus it hit me harder than a puck to the noggin, St. Lawrence was where I was supposed to be!
The threat of Graduation had made me appreciate what a great decision (Thanks Mom) I made! I can’t even begin to fathom not coming back to Canton next fall. On a brighter note only five more days until the weekend! With two quizzes this week and Greek Recruitment beginning Wednesday my schedule is packed! Look for more next week!
Best Wishes & Happy Monday
Haley

Congrats
As an SLU Alum and a member of the SLU Alumni Council it was neat to come across your blog. As a life long "easterner" I look forward to your midwest perspective. Most of all enjoy your senior year.
Good to see your blog, Haley!
Diane posted a link to this blog on FB so I thought I'd ck it out. I enjoyed reading your college selection post. Have a tremendous senior year and the best of luck in your Career Services Appt and beyond.
Take care!

I currently live in the Kansas City area so as a fellow midwesterner - although not originally - I look forward to seeing your blog entries about life in the North Country - even after 44 yrs away from Canton - I still find most winters quite mild compared to the temperatures I suffered through my freshman year. Enjoy your senior year - it is over before you know it!
