I feel Danish
St. Lawrence University
There is so much to write about, it is always difficult to pick just one thing. There is always so much going on here in Copenhagen, it would take forever to talk about everything what we get to do. So, here are some highlights from this past week:
Rundetaarn (The Round Tower) - This is a tower right in the center of Copenhagen built with the initiative of King Christian IV. It is actually located only a few blocks from school. Some of my friends from SLU and I decided that it would be a great afterschool activity, so on Tuesday we decided to climb the tower after class. It was quite a climb and the architecture was very unique. There were no stairs, but instead a 209-meter long spiral ramp that winds up the tower. Upon reaching the top, you are greeted by one of the best views of Copenhagen. Standing about 35 meters above the street there is a 360-degree view of Copenhagen in all its glory. I have included some pics from the day. The first picture is of two fellow St. Lawrence Students (Katie and Liz) and me at the top of the tower. The second photo is a view from the top, you can see pretty much the whole city and in the distance is the bridge to Sweden. The third picture is Rundetaarn itself from street-level. If you are ever in Copenhagen this is a must-do. It is very touristy, but a lot of fun! It is cool having so many possibilities just minutes from school.
Today, I also had the opportunity to visit Parliament. We went with one of my classes and even got to talk with some cool people. We met with a woman named Ida Auken. She is a member of the Socialist People’s Party in Denmark and the Chairwoman of the environmental affairs committee. She chatted with us about the role of the media in Denmark and the media’s role in the government. It was very interesting! We also met with Claus Kaae-Nielsen. He is a journalist that covers many of the stories that occur in Parliament. He also discussed the media’s role in Denmark. It was great to be able to compare Danish and American politics. It was a great experience. Every Wednesday here at DIS is dedicated to field studies and it is one of the things I look most forward to each week.
I should be getting to bed soon. It is only 22:24 right now in my time. That is 10:24 PM, but I have to get up wicked early for a study tour tomorrow! You will hear all about it next week I’m sure!
