100 Student Clubs and Organizations on Campus?!
St. Lawrence University
Hello everyone! It's that time of year again...classes are in full swing for students and faculty.
Meanwhile, most of us here in admissions are packing
our bags as we will soon be hitting the roads (already) recruiting the Class of
2013. My first stops = Buffalo, NY and Seattle, WA!
Fall is in the air...the Adirondack
chairs in this picture are outside the admissions office and you can see the
leaves are already on the ground.
Last week, I attended the SLU Student Organization Fair, held outside every year in front of the Student Center. As I walked around, I would guess there were about sixty organizations present at the Fair.
My student assistant, Allyssa, and I reserved a table for Admissions to
recruit student volunteers to host high school seniors if they want to spend
the night on campus.
You can see that there was a great turnout – I think the
beautiful weather helped! The music was sponsored
by ACE (The Association for Campus Entertainment), which is a student-driven
organization.
This year, Douglas Fir, a Boston-based band,
provided most of the entertainment. Our
own KSLU Radio also
provided some music.
This fair is especially helpful to First Year Students, as it is an easy way to meet new people, make connections across campus, and see the wide range of clubs that are present on campus.
When I walked around the fair, I took some pictures, as you can probably tell I love to do.
Here, our Associate Chaplain Rev. Shaun Whitehead is at
the table recruiting new students to join the SLU Gospel
Choir and inform campus of the weekly Progressive
Christian Worship Service. She is chatting with the Vice President and Dean of
Student Life, Joe
Tolliver.
I also noticed several of our Admissions Tour Guides were at the Fair. They are busy, involved people as they were not looking to join clubs, but representing them!
Here are a few examples...
- The ACE Table
Tour Guide Zach Graham ’10 strikes a pose for the camera. He is involved with ACE as Concert Chair, which provided the music at the fair.
- The Amnesty International Table
Tour Guides Liliana Saplontai ’11 and
Bupe Mazimba ’11 are both involved with Amnesty: Liliana (left) is Secretary and Bupe (right)
is Treasurer.
- The Greenhouse Table
- Tour Guide Katie Spring ‘09 is a member of the Greenhouse and recruiting students to join.
- The ASIA Table (ASIA = Asian Students Intercultural Association)
Khady Hamid ‘11, is pictured second
from left (wearing red), also works in our office as a counselor’s assistant.
Here are a few more random shots of tables at the Fair...the Swingin' Saints and The History Society.
Have a great rest of the week!
