A Walk Into Canton
St. Lawrence University
Tuesday night, after I finished my work of course, I met up with some friends at the Hoot Owl for “Senior Blues.” This is a St. Lawrence tradition among seniors to gather, if they can, every Tuesday to hang out, play darts or pool and eat some of the Hoot Owl’s delicious popcorn. Here I am not only surrounded by the friends that I came with but I am also able to catch up with people from my First Year Program (FYP), on my squash team, or those that I have class with. I enjoy the fact that while being off campus I can still expect to see people that I know and don’t know from the University.
Another area this reminds me of is the Partridge Café. I must admit, this is one of my
favorite locations off campus. Since my freshman year, this quaint
restaurant has become a tradition for my friends and I to meet for breakfast
every Sunday to catch up on everyone's weekend. We often laugh about the
latest escapades at the Tick-Tock or how one of us grabbed a ride with the
Sergi's delivery man because it was 8 degrees below zero! It’s not
necessarily the Partridge's famous Sunshine Bagel or the timeless antiques
filling the room, but rather the notion that other students share our mutual
tradition with their group of friends as well. If there is a sandwich I recommend it has to be the tuna melt. To this day, it is the best tuna sandwich I've ever had. Bold statement, I know.
I’m really looking forward to Friday night for two reasons. One, the Gender Studies department is coming over to our house for ‘coffee time’ and two, immediately following desserts and good conversation we have our Debutant Ball. This is a theme party where we dress up in silly clothes (particularly old prom dresses from the 80’s or silly ball gowns) and have some of our closest pals over to kick off the weekend. I’m sure I’ll have some good pictures for you next week!
