The Snow Has Fallen

St. Lawrence University

Slu_3 This past Monday I flew back from my sisters wedding in Carmel, California. Let me tell you, what a blast! I can't believe my sister has a husband now AND not only that but I have yet another brother. That makes four! When I arrived on Thursday, my aunt and uncle had a cocktail party where this picture was taken. In this picture we have eight S.L.U. Alum's and a soon to be ninth, me! In case you can't see the resemblance, a majority of the people in this photo are my family members and two others are close family friends.

I like to believe that I have been a part of the St. Lawrence community for just about eleven years now. I am the fifth and last Carbone to attend the University and have had the privilege of watching the campus expand and evolve as a more diverse and cohesive environment. Coming here, I feared that others would fail to see me as Blake but rather, 'Little Carbone' as I was so often called in high school. It soon became clear that by taking advantage of campus activities and organizations, I was finally seen as an individual and could escape any preconceived notions that may come along with the territory of being a Carbone. I think that it goes to show just how much a positive impact St. Lawrence has had on our family and friends. We have all shared really genuine and unique experiences.

Believe it or not, it's already started snowing in Canton! Shocker isn't it? Okay well no not really, but I just wasn't ready for it to come so soon. Come on, right before Halloween? I can remember that happening when I was younger but not in my recent years. I just hope that we're still able to have the outside concert for the Halloween Party at the O.C. which happens to be one of my favorite events of the year.
Last night I drove to Heuvelton for 'Wing Night' at Doug's Tavern. Every Wednesday they have wings for $0.40 each with a variety of delicious flavors such as honey mustard, grande, sweet n' sour, bbq, hot, butter garlic and well you get the picture. My friends and I try and go as often as we can. Although I think the wings are very good I am a Buffalo girl and have to stick to my roots on this one and say that I have had better. If you are from the Buffalo area I suggest you go to Duff's because they are by far the best wings across the nation, maybe even the world!

A lot of wings...perhaps. I was hungry, what?

saint lawrence

Hi, Blake:'
I'm the father of a boy from San Diego who is being heavily recruited to play soccer at Saint Lawrence. I was scanning the college's web site and saw the student blogs and am interested in getting feedback about how difficult it is for a California kid to adjust to the weather and small-school atmosphere there. Everything I see about the college is incredibly impressive -- financial aid, academics, student morale -- but I'm just worried about the cultural adjustment of a kid going from laid-back San Diego (although he's anything but laid-back on the soccer pitch) where he's only worn a suit and tie a couple days in his life to a school that I surmise has a lot of East Coast preppies.
I'm not being condescending about East Coast kids or the weather, I'm just trying to see if my kid fits in. I.E. it wouldn't make any sense to send him to Purdue around a bunch of engineering geeks because that isn't what my kid is interested in.
Also, if you could tell me how you travel to California and your parents travel there to visit you. Via Canada? Saint Lawrence seems very hard and expensive to get to and we are not a wealthy family.
My boy's soccer coach attended Saint Lawrence and played on a national championship team there and raves about the school and coach Durocher. Any nuggets of information you could provide would be very helpful.

Summer Blog

Mr. Callahan,
I just wanted to touch base at let you know that Blake has graduated, and I will be blogging this year. It should be up and running in a week or so. Feel free to check back often and you will see we are far from east coast preppies (Which is a HUGE stereotype!).
In response to a couple of your questions:
The weather: I was actually talking last night with one of my friends from Jamaica, who prior to coming here a cold day for him was in the 80s. His is now a senior and the cold weather has not negatively impacted his time her and actually be a fun experience. The winters here actually can be quite fun and often people get introduced to new recreational activities, such as pond hockey, skiing/snowboarding, snow shoeing and of course sledding. Not to mention spring and fall are absolutely beautiful.
The People: St. Lawrence prides it self on its sense of community and friendliness of students, faculty and staff. I would consider this a laid back place where west coasters have no problem fitting in (I have a number of friends from California, Colorado, Washington). As far as the suit is concerned, Outside of job interviews I have never had to wear a suit on campus.
I hope that this info was helpful to you and I look forward to your comments on my blog this summer.
