The Best New Study Room You've Never Heard Of: The Josephine Young Room
St. Lawrence University
Since many of our admissions bloggers have already mentioned some of their favorite study spots, I'd like to take this opportunity to mention the newest, and arguably the most fancy, study space on campus: the new and improved Josephine Young Room.
Our central library at St. Lawrence is named after one of our most famous alumni, Owen D. Young. Even if you haven't heard of him, you've definitely heard about his business. Young founded Radio Corporation of America, also known simply as RCA. RCA manufactured some of the nations top models in phonographs, radios, and televisions in the first half of the 20th century. The company was bought out by GE in the 80s and no longer exists but Young continues to remembered for his achievements in American industry.
The newly renovated space inside the library is named after his daughter Josephine, who became a successful fiction writer. This space has been one of my favorites in the library for quite a while now. Up until recently this room has flown under the radar of most of our library goers but it was one of my go-to locations when all of the other study rooms with great views had been taken for that reason. The room also includes a bookshelf along the left wall where the "classics of world literature" according to our faculty and staff were kept. I always enjoyed letting my gaze wander through those shelves pausing at titles everywhere from The Iliad to Atlas Shrugged. The books were temporarily removed for construction but should soon be making a return to the shelves.
The new Josephine Young Room features a brand new beige carpet, beautiful wood paneling along the walls and windows, and some of the most luxurious and comfortable leather chairs at this school. I've posted up in here all day and I've even seen a couple people come in just to take a nap in the chairs. For anyone familiar with the board game Clue, imagine it looking a lot like the Study. (An actual picture may be on the way really soon so stay tuned)
My only warning, which was conveyed to me by one of my study mates upon my arrival, is that people tend to come in and just stare at the beauty for about five seconds before leaving without a word. The room is remarkably well decorated and a place that I am happy exists for future generations of St. Lawrence scholars.
Well, that's the news from ODY Library. I still have two papers and exam standing between me and my summer, so it's back to business until then. I'll be blogging all summer though so be sure to continue following me for updates on all things St. Lawrence.
