A Modern-Day Miracle

St. Lawrence University

It seems that the British pop band "Hot Chocolate" and myself now have something in common...we believe in miracles!  At St. Lawrence, our system of Academic Planning and Registration (APR) is the way in which we sign up for classes each semester.  Basically, the way it works is that a person creates a list of classes in which they are interested, chooses (usually) four of them that they want the most, and requests them, hoping for the best.  Seniors get first priority, followed by juniors, sophomores, and then freshman.  It doesn't always work out that you get the classes that you want, especially if you are not an upperclassman.

I don't know if everyone is like me, but I know that when it is my turn to run, the first thing I check when I wake up in the morning is whether or not I got into all of my classes.  Sometimes, you see big green letters saying "registered" for all four classes...those are the best days.  Sometimes, you see those happy, green letters for one or two of those classes, and the rest still say "requested," which  means that they are full and you didn't get in.  Those are the frustrating days in which you have to frantically figure out how to rearrange your plan to make something else work before APR runs for the second round.  This happens often, but it usually ends up working out in the end.  Also, at least in my experience, if you bother a professor enough and are polite about it, they will try and accommodate you, but don't get mad at me if that doesn't work for you!

Anyway, back to the miracle.  I woke up yesterday, after dreaming that I got into all of my classes except for the one that I really needed (psyc. research methods), and I ran to my computer.  I logged on and sure enough, I was registered for everything...except research methods.  I was thrown.  I thought for sure I would get in because I run before the rest of the sophomores due to my scholarship, and also there were ten spots open before the sophomores even ran, so I didn't expect I would have to worry about that class.  I was more worried about getting one of the last two spots open in abnormal psyc.  But I digress...  By this point, I had an exam in less than an hour that I felt rather unprepared for (I put in my fair share of time studying, don't worry!), a big project due the next day, and a bunch of other things on my mind as well...I couldn't deal with this setback.  So I decided that just for the time being, I would try and get into health psyc. and then try and fight my way into research methods later.  APR was scheduled to run again at 12, so I removed research methods from my request list and added health psyc.  I am almost 100% certain that I made this change...I double checked it to be sure, because I knew I had to do something!  Anyway, my boyfriend checked the website at 11:59...the minute before it was supposed to run, and apparently I still had research methods requested because it was still on the list and health psyc. was nowhere to be seen.  There were no open spots, so trying to get into the class would just be a waste.  He didn't know whether or not to try and change it quick, and ended up just leaving it, figuring I had some reason for not making the change.  And this is where the miracle comes in...he checked the results one minute later, and it had me listed as registered for research methods.  AMAZING!  I checked about 6 different computers to make sure there hadn't been some mistake, but the proof was right before my eyes.  I was in!  It was a series of little miracles that all had to happen to lead to the grand finale.  But I am not complaining.  Now, I am into four great classes, and none of them are on Friday, so I have a three day weekend all semester.  That definitely turned my day around...

Anyway, that's my story and I believe in miracles!!!
