An Adirondack Adventure
I hopped in the car after work on Monday for the relatively short hour and fifteen minute road trip to Canaras, our Conference center on Saranac Lake. Canrars is a summer vacation destination for SLU Alums and family. It is also a great summer work opportunity for students and I was stopping by to visit some friends who are spending their summer in this Adirondack oasis.
I arrived just in time for dinner, which was prime rib (Yum!). It was a nice break from having to cook for myself, even though my cooking skills have made quite the improvement over the last month. After dinner was a tour of the camp, which consisted of some very homey lodges, the main lodge, a library, lean to and a boat house, with a great speed boat for water skiing (It is my hope to return and learn to ski or wake board this summer!). We spent the rest of the night sitting around a campfire, talking and sharing stories with the Alums. I was surprised to learn that we hadn't always been the saints but infact, were once the St. Lawrence Larries. The Alums were surprised, to hear all of us current students calling St. Lawrence SLU (pronounced Slew).
The next morning I woke up early to return to the office for a couple of hours of work, before I returned to the ADKs with my fellow interns. We ate a fantastic lunch at The Cottage, a restaurant right on Mirror Lake. After lunch we proceeded to climb Mount Jo, a small mountain just out side of Lake Placid. From the summit there were amazing views of the High Peaks. This inspired me to get out my hiking boots and pack, and plan a few more trips to keep working on bagging the high peaks.
After being chased of the mountain by T-Storms, we returned to town for Starbucks and some shopping (my shopping consisted of going to eastern mountain sports! The quest for outdoor gear is never ending). The girls made sure to hit up every single clothing store there was. We are definatly lucky to have the ultimate playground so close to us. Off to DC for the forth of July! Expect some stories and maybe with some luck a presidential meeting!
