Contemporary Issues Forum & Hiring
Just moments ago, I attended the Contemporary Issues Forum for this week. The speaker was St. Lawrence alumna and member of the Board of Trustees, Elinor Tatum. The title of the discussion was "Community Newspapers in the Era of Obama." Tatum is the Publisher and Editor in Chief of the New York Amsterdam News, one of the oldest black newspapers in the country. The talk was very interesting and I was especially enthralled because of my interest in journalism. It was cool to see how far she has gone and the experience she gained during her time here at SLU. She even worked on St. Lawrence's own newspaper, The Hill News. I also feel very lucky to have to opportunity to have breakfast with Ms. Tatum tomorrow morning. Members from The Weave, The Hill News, and the Black Student Union will be attending the breakfast tomorrow and get a chance to talk to Ms. Tatum.
Also, tomorrow is the second information session concerning the Summer Admissions Internship. I remember attending the very same information session, but it is hard to believe that it was one year ago.
The picture I added is of the intern group from last year. This was one of our first days on the job. If I could I would do it again this summer! In a few weeks all of us interns actually get to help out in the interview process. We are all looking forward to that because we went through it last year. Now we get to be on the other side of the table.
I am slowly realizing that my day tomorrow is packed full of things. In the evening I have an exam for my Instrumental Analysis class. I have been studying for days and I just hope that I am prepared. This chemistry course has been very interesting thus far. This week we got to do a pretty neat lab analyzing fibers, inks, and hair by using IR microscopy. Then we got to compare our IR specs to a forensics library to determine if there was a match or not. (Translation: we did the cool thing like they do on CSI and crime shows when they analyze different objects and catch the bad guys.)
In just a few minutes I actually have to head out to a meeting for my Community Assistant position. We have an all-staff meeting in which we are discussing the hiring of new CAs for next year. I feel privileged to be involved in two different hiring processes coming up at SLU in the next few weeks. It is fun interviewing people that want to be involved in similar things as I have been here at St. Lawrence.
One of the many things that I took away from Elinor Tatum's talk this evening was a joke where she described her multiple majors, one of them being "extracurricular activities." Its so true! I feel so involved on campus and there are so many things to do that I can hardly keep up. It really feels like all of my activities are like another major because I am so busy. I might actually borrow that joke!
Lastly, this Friday will be the dedication ceremony for "Pub 56" and I got my tickets today! More info to come about this next week!
