History of ODY montage/display?
Average: 4.6 (5 votes)

Longer term project idea to create a display or montage of the history of ODY at SLU (perhaps scope larger to include libraries). Also like the idea of a 3d model of the evolution of the library. Could we get the Art departments involved somehow or perhaps use our 3D printer to fashion something?I like the idea of ODY being also considered a creative space and would like to see more cross departmental cooperation and use.

Poll Group Study Users
Average: 5 (4 votes)

Leave a short paper questionnaire in each Group Study, with a box with a slot for collection.  (Questionnaire would have the name of the Group Study). Potential questions:Dear Group Study User,We've received a grant to improve Group Study spaces in ODY.  Please take a few minutes to answer the questions below to help us know what changes you would recommend.  Thanks in advance for your input!

Adaptible hacker space
Average: 4.4 (5 votes)

One thing that emerged from having Jentery Sayers here was the idea of flexible collaboration space. In his Maker Lab, they use a lot of mobile furniture to switch between electronics work, coding, etc. Since we're not currently set up with any kind of Digital Humanities lab in ODY, I'm wondering if there might be a way to imagine a room that functions as a more general space most of the time but with mobile furniture that would support a kind of social DH work, such as a hack-a-thon for 6-8 students. Theming a space this way could lead to some cool events, and perhaps good publicity.

music in group studies

Seems to be a major use when tech is available in group study spaces now (TechLab and Cafe).  Perhaps it could be done in a way where sound could be controlled to keep it from being disruptive.  It's interesting along these lines how many students one sees using earbuds/headphones while working in the library.  Presumably this is not only for enjoyment, but perhaps also as a method for managing the distration of ambient noise?

Permanent Tech install in MacAllaster

This would take what is already a great teaching/presentation space in many ways into an even better one.  This could be done quite unobtrusively with a screen mounted up in the beams and a projector and speakers mounted up higher on the walls.  Perhaps a wireless approach could be taken using either BYO or loaner laptop

whiteboard wall panels
Average: 4.7 (6 votes)

In open areas with multiple tables, whiteboard wall panels could be used to define study areas, provide some privacy, and foster collaboration.  Clearly this would need to be in areas that are more receptive toward noise.  Specifically, I see this as having potential in the area between IT HelpDesk and BYOTech Alcove on lower-level

sound absorbing panels in group study spaces
Average: 3.4 (5 votes)

In case noise is a problem currently, or will be moreso with improvements to the spaces, sound proofing panels could installed within the group study rooms or in more open areas where group study could be more likely to occur post renovation

student carrel alternatives
Average: 3 (2 votes)

As has been suggest previously:

  • shelf space for books
  • lockers for valuables

Additional thoughts:

  • carts to hold books and lockers that could be moved to where they will be working ... but as I think about it, with students, but perhaps not as much with faculty, there would very likely be challenges with they're being returned where they belong and/or otherwise being kept tidy
  • lockers with power to allow for charging of devices
140A as web/video conferencing suite
Average: 1.8 (5 votes)

140A is getting significant use for web/video conferencing.  It suits well 10-13 participants as it is now configured.  It would be reworked to accommodate perhaps 20, and it could also work for much smaller groups.  This could serve much of web/video conferencing we are currently seeing on campus.  In addition to the web/video conferencing being supporting in 140A currently, other such support has been happening with some regularity in ODY.

soft seating with integrated power and work surfaces

We'll need to look at what is out there, but as much of the soft seating will need to be replaced, we'll want to look closely at innovative approaches.  I would hope that it will also be ergonomically sound
