Framing issues in the language of global interests, the metaphor of “public goods” invites an approach that seeks commonalities with an eye toward action that allow forms of cooperation to be imagined and achieved. This course will critique policy in the US and Canada historically and in the contemporary period, including attention to the local area. Keeping in mind students' positionalities, we will explore policy impacts of states on markets, households and voluntary sectors shaping health and health care in these neighboring countries, both white settler systems categorized as 'liberal' welfare states. In critically approaching these jurisdictions we will explore diverse experiences of health, illness, and health care in the broader context of global capitalism. This course will be important for those with a wide range of interests: from students seeking to understand how and why we got to the present state of crises in health, the economy and society in the US and Canada to those interested in business and the liberal arts to those in interested in public policy. This course introduces students to the basic concepts, functions, and applications of GIS. We discuss maps, data sources and management, and geographic techniques, including global positioning systems, aerial photography and satellite imagery. Through a series of lab exercises students explore the analytical functions of GIS, such as proximity, overlay and three dimensional modeling. To further understand GIS practices and applications, each student develops a GIS project with data appropriate to his or her area of interest.</p></div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=775&amp;2=report" token="QuBB6AL3vzRPQwNGMePtT8jK05i0lmGfVl5ZZErkmDk"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="class__field-instructor-name"> <div class="field__item">Carol Cady</div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=775&amp;2=request_feedback" token="DEV27FM_NHpEqeBcYgKLfxDrNBLLi5q6XWM0uxcldCc"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="class__field-semester d-flex"> <div class="field__label font-weight-bold"> Semester<span class="field__label__suffix mr-1">:</span> </div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item">Spring 2024</div> </div> </div> <div class="class__field-course-code d-flex"> <div class="field__label font-weight-bold"> Course Code<span class="field__label__suffix mr-1">:</span> </div> <div class="field__item">GEOL 233 / GS 233 / ANTH 233</div> </div> <div class="class__field-subject d-flex"> <div class="field__label font-weight-bold"> Subject<span class="field__label__suffix mr-1">:</span> </div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item">Anthropology</div> <div class="field__item">Geology</div> <div class="field__item">Global Studies</div> </div> </div> <div class="class__field-readings"> <div class="field__item"><article data-history-node-id="776" class="node course-reading course-reading--teaser"> <h2> <a href="/node/776" rel="bookmark"> <span>Course Readings - Paper - GEOL/GS 233</span> </a> </h2> <div class="course-reading__field-location d-flex"> <div class="field__label font-weight-bold"> Location<span class="field__label__suffix mr-1">:</span> </div> <div class="field__item">Science Library Circulation-Reserves Desk</div> </div> <div class="course-reading__field-link-to-record-catalog"><p><a class="btn btn-primary" href="https://libcat.stlawu.edu/search~S3?/rGeology+233/rgeology+233/-3%2C-1%2C0%2CB/frameset&amp;FF=rgeology+233&amp;1%2C1%2C">Click here</a> to see the listings and check the availability.</p></div> </article> </div> <div class="field__item"><article data-history-node-id="777" class="node course-reading course-reading--teaser"> <h2> <a href="/node/777" rel="bookmark"> <span>Geographical Information Systems and Science</span> </a> </h2> <div class="course-reading__field-location d-flex"> <div class="field__label font-weight-bold"> Location<span class="field__label__suffix mr-1">:</span> </div> <div class="field__item">Online</div> </div> <div class="course-reading__field-link-to-record-catalog"><p><a class="btn btn-primary" href="https://archive.org/details/geographicalinfo0000unse/mode/2up">Click here</a> to access via Internet Archive. Its primary purpose is to provide a critical understanding of the major theoretical and analytical issues that constitute the crucial challenge to the study of global political economy today. It moves beyond the traditional agenda of international political economy, namely trade and investment, to address a wide range of alternative theories, concepts and themes, including the origins, functions and impacts of transnational corporations, international financial institutions, regional and global trade organizations and non-governmental organizations involved in social movements.
