Special Collections - Frequently Asked Questions

What is Special Collections?

Special Collections is the place in the general library where we keep any items that are scarce, fragile, or valuable. Additionally we have a number of subject collections. Any type of library material that meets the above criteria can be found in special collections, such as printed books, journals, newspapers, maps, atlases, photographs, reports, diaries, correspondence, etc.

Where is Special Collections?

The Frank and Anne Piskor Reading Room is located on the main level of the Owen D. Young Library directly across the atrium from the front doors.

How are materials arranged in Special Collections?

We have three general groups of materials: rare books, manuscript collections and SLU archives.

What general topics do you have materials for?

It is difficult to say. A collection of civil war letters, for example, may have as much informational value to someone doing research in gender studies, environmental studies, as well as the civil war.

Its best to check with the Special Collections staff in addition to searching the catalog.

How do I find specific items in Special Collections?

All of our printed books and journals are cataloged on ODYsseus.

All of our manuscript collections have brief descriptive records on ODYsseus.

Additionally, our manuscript collections have finding aids either in the reading room or available through the libraries’ website.

The archives of St. Lawrence, for the most part, are not on ODYsseus. Finding aids are available in the reading room.

How & when can I use materials from Special Collections?

Because of their nature, all materials must be used in the reading room which is open Monday–Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. During the fall and spring semesters we are also open on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 pm. Archives and Special Collections are closed for the entire month of July.

Are there restrictions to using materials in Special Collections?

The reading room is open to anyone with a valid photo-id. Readers are required to sign in, check their bags, and take notes in pencil. Food and drink are not permitted in the room.

Can I photocopy materials from Special Collections?

A limited amount of photocopies can be made by Special Collections staff depending on the physical condition of the item(s) and on staff time. We also have the ability to digitally scan items.

Please see separate handouts for information on specific topics or types of research.
