Norbert S. Olshefski  was born in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania and attended Wilkes College.  He had a 46 year career as a newspaper reporter, photographer and editor, including a stint as a reporter/photographer for the Syracuse Post Standard from 1956 to 1958, when he was based out of Massena.  His career began in the years following World War II when he was with the Pacific edition of the Stars and Stripes, where he also served as a war correspondent during the Korean War.  He also worked for the Morning Call in Allentown, PA and the Stars and Stripes in Bremerhaven, Germany.  He later joined the Washington Star and was an original employee of the Washington Times, where he worked until his retirement.

This collection consists of some 1,100 photographic negatives in 120 mm format taken in and around the Massena, New York area when Mr. Olshefski was employed by the Syracuse Post Standard in the late1950s.  The photos document the end-stage construction of St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project and associated infrastructure.  Photographs of Seaway work near Montreal are also included.  Early construction of the Reynolds Metals and the Chevrolet plants in Massena are included, though not in great detail.  Photos of other area news events, community development projects, festivals, and visits from numerous political and government dignitaries surrounding the development of the Seaway and Power Project are featured.  The photos described above are organized into a ring binder and are categorized by the event featured.  Also included are hundreds of duplicate negatives and photos very similar to those included in the binder, but stored in wax sleeves and banded together.
