The Friends of the Owen D. Young and Launders Libraries (FODYLL)
Founded in 1970, FODYLL is dedicated to making an excellent college library even better. Where does money donated to the Friends go?
- The Friends provide an important source of funding for the libraries' teaching and archival mission. For full details on the collection development mission of the Friends and what has been purchased please see the FODYLL Purchases link.
- The Friends sponsor two competitions for St. Lawrence students each year, offering cash prizes to the winners. The Samuel Johnson Bibliography Prize recognizes the best bibliography in support of a research paper of an honor thesis. The Josephine G. Mentley St. Lawrence and North Country Studies Award recognizes the best class paper and the best honors thesis on topics relating to the North Country or St. Lawrence University.
- Together with the Academic Dean's office the Friends host author's talks to honor faculty who have written books. Since the author gives a brief talk on some aspect of the work as part of the program, these gatherings offer an opportunity for informal discussion of the creative work faculty are doing, and a chance for the University Community to network on shared creative interests.
- The FODYLL work to nurture a community of readers. The Friends sponsor a lecture each fall on the importance of reading, an event inaugurated by the critic Sven Birkerts, and a lecture during Commencement week by a member of the St. Lawrence faculty, a long-standing tradition. On occasion the Friends invite guest speakers to inform the community of major acquisitions.
All events sponsored by the Friends are open to the public, and are free of charge.
