Information for Exchange Scholars

The exchange visitor (J) program promotes cultural exchange through work and study in the United States. St. Lawrence University sponsors exchange students and exchange scholars. Exchange students should view information in the "prospective/new students" section of this website. If you are considering working at the university as an exchange scholar, you will find information below on eligibility, required documentation, health insurance, and housing.  If you have further questions, please contact the ISS office.

Professors

Documents Required from Scholar to Process DS-2019

In order to issue a DS-2019 document to an exchange scholar, the following supporting documents must be provided to the St. Lawrence University Responsible Officer by the exchange scholar.

  • A copy of biographical passport page for the scholar and for each dependent accompanying the scholar on his/her program
  • Permanent physical address in home country
  • Copies of any previous DS-2019 or other immigration documents issued to the scholar
  • Proof of health insurance (see below requirements) for duration of program for scholar and all dependents accompanying scholar on program.  All University offered health insurance plans meet the DOS standards.

Health Insurance

Program participants and their dependents are required to have medical insurance coverage with the following minimum benefits for the duration of their exchange program:

  • Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
  • Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
  • Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $50,000
  • A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness

An insurance policy secured to meet the benefits requirements must be underwritten by an insurance corporation with an A.M. Best rating of "A-" or above, an Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of "A-I" or above, a Standard and Poor's Claims Paying Ability rating of "A-" or above, or a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of B+ or above or backed by the full faith and credit of the government of the exchange visitor's home country. 

Housing

Unless it is stipulated as a benefit in the offer letter, scholars must arrange for their own housing while participating in their exchange program.  Potential rental properties can be located at http://northcountrynow.com/classifieds/apartments.

Orientation

All new exchange scholars participate in new faculty orientation which is held in August each year.  In addition, exchange scholars are welcome to participate in the pieces of international orientation pertinent to them.
