InformationTechnology employs HelpDesk students and Educational Technology students to assist the St. Lawrence University campus.

Job Descriptions

All student employees must be able to demonstrate the ability to work with Microsoft Windows operating systems, web browser and email software.  Our employees must also be customer service oriented, willing to work as part of a team, have excellent communication and listening skills as well as the ability to work with all types of people and learning styles.

Educational Technologies Student Staff:
            Educational technologies student staff will conduct training (primarily for other students, also for faculty or staff) and contribute to educational technologies programming. The successful ed tech student staff member will be able to provide effective individual and small group instruction in how to use various technologies, including software and hardware common to the educational environment. Ed tech student staff will expand their own knowledge of various technologies as they develop professional training skills, particularly in support of teaching and learning technologies and the curriculum. Ed tech student staff must also be customer service oriented and willing to work as part of a team, with a strong interest in learning new technologies and, in turn, teaching others new skills. Technical expertise is not required.

Skills Desired for Educational Technologies Students:
• Knowledge of media development and web development: • multimedia development programs (Flash, Director, Captivate, etc) • digital video and audio programs (Real Player, Windows Media Player, iMovie, iTunes, GarageBand, etc) • image editing software (Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, etc) • website design (Dreamweaver) • web/media accessibility and usability • Knowledge of Apple/Mac operating system and software

Helpdesk Assistants:
            Assist faculty/staff and students over the phone with computer problems in labs, offices and residence halls.  They create and maintain work orders on the Service Desk workorder system. These students are also the primary contacts for checking in and checking out student computers to be repaired. Helpdesk Assistants must also have excellent communication and customer service skills in order to work with clients over the phone and walk-ins. All students normally start out at the Helpdesk in order to become familiar with the job before potentially moving into other student assistant options.

Student Technicians:
            Student Technicians are primarily responsible for going out on campus to fix computer problems from the workorder system. Some of these tasks include troubleshooting computer problems – both in a Windows and Macintosh environment, installing software, delivering and installing computer hardware, and multiple other tasks as assigned. Another function of this role is to provide brief training to faculty and staff in a variety of areas such as software and computer usage. These students must have good communication skills and be able to work effectively and patiently with a wide variety of computer users.

Student Computer Repair Technicians:
            These students are primarily responsible for, but not limited to, the setup and repair of computers that are checked-in to Information Technology to be repaired.  Workers in this position should have the knowledge to assist with work orders when other techs are busy. Repair technicians are also encouraged to, but not required to give one-on-one tutoring to faculty and staff with various computer software programs. They must be able to work effectively and patiently with a wide variety of computer users.

Student Computer Lab Assistants:
            These students assist our Computing Facilities Coordinator to help keep SLU Computer labs up and running. The primary tasks of the role include hardware repair, computer imaging, and some printer repair. Workers in this position should have the knowledge to assist with work orders when other techs are busy. They must be able to work effectively and patiently with a wide variety of computer users.
