SLU Student Voicemail Setup

If this is your first time setting up a voicemail, please make use of the tutorial established to guide you through the process. Your voicemail number will be emailed to students at the start of each semester and can be found with your listing on the student directory. This mail box has been assigned to you and it will remain available to you as long as you remain an active student.

This requires a valid telephone number to work correctly, so if you change rooms, you must notify the Residential Learning Communities office (x5250) so that your voicemail will be moved to your new telephone extension. Your telephone may have a choice between pulse and touch tone dialing, but the voicemail system requires touch tone settings.

To set up your voicemail

  • Lift the receiver
  • Dial x5050
  • When you hear an automated attendant (AA) speak, press the star (*) button
  • Enter your voicemail number (as printed on your Confidential Verification Form)
  • If entered correctly, the AA will ask you to enter your voicemail password; if you are not instructed to put in a password, the AA will tell you the number you entered and tell you it was not valid. If the number you entered is correct, but the AA tells you it is not valid, please call the IT Helpdesk at x5770
  • When asked for the password, enter 1 2 3 4 5 6 7.
    • This temporary password is the key to accessing the setup tutorial that will walk you step-by-step through the process; the tutorial will require you to establish a different password.
  • When setup is complete, the AA will say “Goodbye” and disconnect your call; you will not hear this tutorial again.
But you are not finished just yet!

You must now program your telephone so that unanswered calls will find their way to YOUR voicemail. This process is known as Call Forwarding. You can forward your calls to your voicemail both if you are currently on the phone or if you are away from the phone.

To activate the call forwarding:

  • Call forward busy:
    • Lift receiver
    • Listen for dial tone
    • Press * 2 5050
    • Listen for 3 beeps
    • Hang up
  • Call forward no answer:
    • Lift receiver
    • Listen for dial tone
    • Press * 3 5050
    • Listen for 3 beeps
    • Hang up

If you should wish to disconnect your voicemail from your telephone (i.e. suspend call forwarding on your line), you would need to cancel your settings as follows:

  • Cancel Call Forward Busy:
    • Lift receiver
    • Listen for dial tone
    • Press # 2
    • Listen for 3 beeps
    • Hang up
  • Cancel call forward no answer:
    • Lift receiver
    • Listen for dial tone
    • Press # 3
    • Listen for 3 beeps
    • Hang up
    • If you do NOT hear the 3 beeps that confirm that your telephone has been successfully call forwarded, the rapid busy tone you will hear is indicating that your telephone has already been forwarded. In that event, you should test your forwarding either by calling your extension from another phone, or by asking the IT Helpdesk (x5770) to assist you.

How to check your messages:

Lift the receiver on your telephone; if you hear regular dial tone, no new messages have been received. If you hear a broken dial tone, a new message has been received for either you or a roommate. This broken dial tone will remain on the line until new messages are retrieved, but will have no impact on the ability to place or receive calls. To check your voicemail, dial 5050. When the AA begins to speak, press the star (*) key.

When asked, enter your voicemail number. You will be prompted to enter the new password that you set up during the tutorial. The AA will announce how many new and old messages are in your mailbox and will prompt you to press the number 1 to retrieve your messages. After a message has been heard, you will be prompted on the procedures to erase or save the message and other features available.

A final note about passwords

Your password is completely confidential; the Telecommunications staff can not look it up if you forget it. We strongly advise that you keep your password written down in a secure place.
