English major, reporter, law student, attorney: Deborah Squiers ’84’s career path connects many skills and interests. After a first career in journalism, which included being a reporter for the
New York Law Journal, she enrolled in Fordham Law School and now practices as an intellectual property lawyer with an emphasis on trademarks and copyrights in fashion, food/restaurants and publishing. As a partner with New York City-based firm Partner, Cowan, Liebowitz & Latman, P.C., she represents clients in federal courts and handles trademark-contested proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
“
I principally rely on my writing and oral advocacy skills, the polishing of which began at St. Lawrence,” says the Chi Omega sorority member. “Public speaking opportunities gave me a self-confidence that has stayed with me.” Her advice to prospective and current students: “
Use the widespread network of St. Lawrence graduates to find summer employment or a January internship in a law-related field.”
