Jennifer Houser ’10

With no experience with journalism prior to St. Lawrence, Jennifer Houser ’10 never expected that she would become executive editor of the student newspaper.

Spending her childhood in Lyme, NH, and attending Hanover High School, Jennifer Houser ’10 had no experience with journalism prior to St. Lawrence. So when she attended a Hill News meeting during her first year at St. Lawrence, to share suggestions on ways to improve the student-run paper, she never expected three years later that she would be the executive editor.

The English major worked her way up, starting as a writer and then a layout editor.  “My position as top editor is no more important than anyone else’s; we are all working equally hard to come out with a great issue each week that people will want to read,” she says.

Jenny was vice president of her First-Year Council, and during her sophomore year was a member of Thelmo, St. Lawrence’s student government.  She was also a student mentor on the Library and Art Gallery Committee. “Since I’ve become one of the top editors at the Hill News, I’ve had to leave some of the other activities I participated in,” she says. “The paper takes up a lot of time, but it also gives me a good excuse to attend great events all over campus.”

Her favorite aspect of SLU life is the community. “I’ve met a lot of people through my position who love St. Lawrence and come back again and again,” she says.  “The majority of students go to different events, get involved with different organizations and meet lots of different people, and that’s the true St. Lawrence experience.”
