Africa is anthropology teacher Wendi Haugh’s world. She joined the St. Lawrence faculty in 2009 as assistant professor of anthropology and African studies, after holding visiting positions at Williams College and Oberlin College. A graduate of Williams, Haugh earned the Ph.D. in cultural and linguistic anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania.
Her dissertation was titled "Singing the Nation: Discourses of Identity and Community in Northern Namibia," with research focusing on national identity in Namibia as it is constructed in songs, speeches and conversations. Haugh teaches courses in environmental conservation and popular culture in Africa, as well as a general course on the peoples and cultures of Africa and an introductory course in cultural anthropology. She has had articles published in a number of academic journals.
