New History Course Offered for Fall 2010
HIST 247C--Debating Muslims: Jihadism, Islamic Liberalism, and other Responses to Modernity
This course will consider the ways in which Muslims have responded to the modern era. It will consider the development of debates regarding such basic issues as democracy, science, and the rights of women from the 19th Century to the present. Particular emphasis will be placed on contemporary issues such as the position of Muslims in Western societies, the rise of Political Islam, jihadism, and the veiling question. Much of this class will be conducted as a seminar, so students should be prepared for active participation in class discussions.
