Carbon Neutral Peak Weekend

Tags:
Location:
Adirondacks, Seward Range
Date:
September 30, 2011 2:00pm - October 2, 2011 4:00pm

The Climate Action Plan has been accepted by the University.  As we move toward zero-net greenhouse gas emissions, students find exciting ways to celebrate and participate in this work; including putting a new, environmentally friendly, twist on an old school tradition.  Beginning in 1982, St. Lawrence students, faculty, staff and alumni have put at least one person on the top of each summit of all 46 High Peaks (mountains above 4,000 vertical feet) in the Adirondack Park in one weekend.

This year three students (including Alexander Duane and Andrew Skaggs) are leading a ‘Carbon Neutral Peak Weekend Trip.'  They post, "If you went to the Peak Weekend meeting at the OC side lawn today and found the trips a little too tame, or maybe not enough mileage myself and three others are planning to bike to the Seward trail head, hike the Sewards and bike home to Canton.  We will be leaving Friday afternoon at approximately 2pm and returning Sunday. Biking will be 65 miles each way and the hiking will be close to 20 miles.  We are looking for a few ambitious souls with a love for the outdoors and bicycles.  If interested, please contact us."

Would you like a space on campus to visit that is a bit more diverse and edible?  Would you like to help design and create such a space?

Please join us in designing a new garden behind Commons College, including fruit trees, berry bushes, herbs, places to relax, and perhaps an outdoor classroom area and sculpture?

Thanks to funding from a University Innovation Grant, Fruit for the Future, we will be doing some sketches, and discussing different ideas originally developed this summer with Keith Morris who teaches permaculture design.

Questions and interest should be directed to Cassie DiMarino

Fast for the CAP

Location:
Campus-wide & Friday, Student Center
Date:
April 21, 2011 8:00pm - April 22, 2011 8:00pm

On Friday, members of the student body will be giving up their privilege to eat - a privilege many people around the world are losing because of climate change.  The 12 members of the Greenhouse are leading a Fast for the CAP, starting Thursday night at 8PM and lasting until Friday at 8PM.

The purpose of this action is to raise awareness about the Climate Action Plan and to show solidarity for those people in the world who suffer injustices of climate change. Because of climate change, people are threatened world-wide with increasing food scarcity and environmental insecurities.

Please join us in this action. Ribbons and information on fasting will be available in the Student Center on Thursday. Contact rdgill07@stlawu.edu for more information.

Bicycle Fixing Workshop

Tags:
Location:
Barn Good Thrift Store
Date:
May 4, 2011 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Spring is here and that means it's time for wheeled devices!

Bring your bicycle, skateboard, scooter, pushcart, rickshaw, dolly, or roller skates over to The Barn Good Thrift Store on Wednesdays from 6-8 to get mended so you can cruise around. If you are interested, student Alex Duane will walk you through the steps of fixing certain parts of a bicycle so you can learn too. Depending on the repair, it will cost between FREE and $5.

Then maybe you will ride your bicycle more and drive a vehicle less!

All bikes should be working. If your bike is not working, then bring it on over. The Barn Good Thrift Store is located in the Barn behind the Java House on University Avenue.
