Environmental Action Organization (EAO)
EAO at St Lawrence University (SLU) strives towards creating a more environmentally friendly campus. We are dedicated to the promotion of environmental awareness on the campus, the community and the world through activism and action.
We are currently working on:
- Green Bikes Program: we have developed a community bike program that provides bicycles for students, faculty and staff to use on campus in order to reduce the amount of driving and consumption of fossil fuels.
- Green Energy for the Student Center: On Wednesday, April 18, a group of students from the Environmental Action Organization presented a proposal to Thelmo asking for funding to purchase green energy for the student center for next semester. The proposal was backed by 650 student signatures supporting the idea and approval from Conservation Council. EAO presented on the benefits of green energy and how this would be a natural step to follow the development of the Environmental Action Plan and the recent signing of the Presidential Climate Commitment. Thelmo passed the funding request with wide support, providing EAO with the means to purchase green energy for the student center, accounting for 7% of total electricity use on campus. EAO is now working with Facilities to implement the change for next semester!
- Recycling Awareness: We are working on designing recycling signs and labels to clear up confusion about recycling at St. Lawrence. Stickers will be printed to clearly mark recycling bins in campus buildings and signs will be created to specify what can and can't be recycled.
- Hiring an Environmental Coordinator: Several group members are looking at the possibility of hiring an environmental coordinator specifically for St. Lawrence University. Currently, many campus environmental issues are being overlooked because there is not enough staff to address them. An environmental coordinator would solve this problem and serve as an environmental voice for the university.
- Other projects: Many group members are involved with other projects such as planning a campus Water Week, the development of the SLU Environmental Action Plan, and the Step It Up Climate Change group.
- Tap water campaign: A couple of group members have formed a subgroup that aims to promote tap water over bottled water as the main thirst quencher on the St. Lawrence University campus.
