Anastasia
Tirio '00 lives in Washington, DC and works at Children's
National Medical Center in the Foundation as manager of donor relations.
She helps the hospital show its appreciation to the people who donate
money and volunteer time. She modestly minimizes her role “I
keep my ear on what's going on with our donors and just keep them
involved in the "CNMC family" -- keep them involved and
educated,” she says, but her role is central to
a non-profit organization that relies of the good will and
generosity of its benefactors.
“I'll never be someone who finds a cure for an illness but
I love that the money we raise helps support the doctor and research
team who will. And I love that we don't turn any child away
to top-notch healthcare regardless of their families' ability to pay.
What better way can an institution give back to the very same community
that supports it? Obviously, I'm proud of where I work
and the people I work for and with...and I strongly support
the hospital's mission,” she says.
The mission of Children's National Medical Center is to be preeminent
in providing pediatric healthcare services that enhance the health
and well-being of children regionally, nationally and internationally. “We're ranked among the top ten pediatric hospitals in the nation and the only health system in the region dedicated exclusively to the care of children. I see my role as educating people about how they can make a difference within the Children's community, and ultimately our greater community, by engaging people philanthropically,” she explained.
Working alongside passionate and dedicated people reminds Anastasia
of St. Lawrence. “SLU profs and staff are dedicated and
loyal to the University, its students and the mission of a liberal
arts education. I didn't realize this all at once...it took
me a few years...but that's one of the things that I cherish most
about St. Lawrence...the community and how my concept of community
evolved by being at SLU,” she added.
Since graduating she has remained involved with the University
by interviewing perspective students when needed and participating
in alumni-sponsored functions; she also served as one of the co-chairs
for the 5th Year Reunion. Anastasia volunteers with an after
school program focused on raising HIV/AIDs awareness among inner-city
youth. She also spends a lot of time in the Shenandoah Valley
and coaches young ski racers during the winter months. While at St.
Lawrence, she was an English Writing major, coordinator of
STOPS, active with the Laurentian Magazine, member of KDS and
participated in the London semester. She
also served as the student-representative to the Alumni Council
in 1999-2000. She is excited to now serve as an alumna.
