Veterinarian Betsy Meinhardt ’80 knows that a good vet must have equal skill in medicine and communication. As a staff member of the Bristol Animal Hospital in Bristol, Vermont, Betsy does more than prevent, diagnose and treat illness. “St. Lawrence was instrumental in preparing me for a career in veterinary medicine,” she says. “Not only the outstanding biology and physiology courses, but courses such as bioethics and courses in philosophy were strong influences in helping me to understand not just the medical aspects of the career, but also the important human/animal connection. I’m glad that I chose a liberal arts education, because I have benefited from it not only as a veterinarian but also as a person.”
Dr. Meinhardt majored in biology, studied on St. Lawrence’s program in Kenya, was a member of the riding team and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and earned Phi Beta Kappa honors before following her dream and enrolling at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, where she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
