Annette Medina-Walpole ’86

Annette Medina-Walpole ’86 cares for senior citizens and teaches new physicians. “I knew I would choose a field in primary care,” she says, “but never expected to become a geriatrician.  St. Lawrence provided a sound education in the basic sciences and humanities in an environment where I could develop and flourish as a student leader.  I am passionate about my work and my love of geriatrics, and education keeps me motivated with career satisfaction.”

Annie is assistant professor of medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.  After graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from St. Lawrence, with a double major in biology and chemistry, she earned her medical degree at the University of Chicago in 1990. She then completed a residency and chief residency in internal medicine at the University of North Carolina, followed by a fellowship in gerontology and geriatric medicine at the University of Washington.  According to the University of Rochester, she is co-director of the Aging Theme at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and program director of the Geriatric Fellowship Program. Her current career and research interests include geriatric education and nursing home-acquired pneumonia.
