John P. Loughlin ’79 continues to
lead the publishing industry as the new executive vice
president and general manager of Hearst
Magazines.
Loughlin's general management duties at Hearst Magazines
Division include oversight of circulation, Internet operations,
finance, manufacturing, distribution and strategy. In addition,
he will assume the role of executive vice president of the advisory
board and senior vice president of Comag Marketing Group LLC (CMG),
and director and vice president of Communications Data Services,
Inc. (CDS).
Loughlin joins Hearst after three years at the TV Guide
Publishing Group where he helped develop and implement
the strategies to introduce a full-size, full-color TV Guide magazine,
scheduled to launch in October, and to launch the new weekly television
magazine for women, Inside TV, which debuted in April.
Loughlin was president and CEO of Primedia Consumer Media and Magazine
Group for two years, and before that he served as president
of Meredith Corporation's television broadcasting group beginning
in 1997. He joined Meredith in 1993 and held a variety of
positions with increasing responsibility including managing Meredith
Custom Publishing and Marketing, Country Home Publishing Franchise,
Meredith Books, and Traditional Home Publishing Franchise. From 1991
to 1993, he was senior vice president/group publisher of The New
York Times Company Women's Magazines, having joined the Times Company
in 1985 as a planning analyst. Loughlin holds an MBA from the Harvard
Graduate School of Business Administration and is a graduate of St.
Lawrence University, with a degree in government and English.
At St. Lawrence, John was president of the Thelomathesian Society,
the student government organization. He earned academic honors and
was a member of the leadership honorary Omicron Delta Kappa.
He also participated in St. Lawrence’s study program in Kenya.
As an alumnus, John has been very active. He has been a University
trustee, a career advisor to students, a fund-raising volunteer,
a Reunion volunteer and a member of the Alumni Executive
Council.
