Gina Kingsbury ’04

One of a handful of women’s hockey players in the world to wear two Olympic gold medals, Gina Kingsbury ’04 credits SLU for her “enjoyment of the game.”  In addition to her hockey equipment, she carries around a lot of hardware, including six world championship medals (three golds and three silvers) and two Olympic gold medals, one from the 2006 Games in Torino, Italy, and one from the 2010 Games at Vancouver in her native Canada.

Kingsbury says playing an intercollegiate sport helped her find balance in her everyday life while staying committed to the goals she had set for herself.  “Surround yourself with passionate people,” she advises. “Find people who will not only transfer some of that passion to you but also understand your goals and help you stay on track to accomplish them.  St. Lawrence has a lot of committed and caring individuals who will help anyone do that.”

Kingsbury, a native of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, who now lives in Calgary, Alberta, was an integral member of the Saints women’s hockey team when the team was a regular in NCAA post-season play, including several Final Fours. “Hockey is a psychological game,” the psychology major told a North Country Public Radio reporter. “In the Olympics I had to strive for success, perform under pressure and rebound from a mistake.  That’s all mental, and I learned it at St. Lawrence. (But I also learned) it’s just a game--do your best and have fun.”
