Kate Farrington ’99 is bilingual
and that launched her career in business.
Spanish major Kate Farrington spent a year abroad in Spain to perfect her language
skills, which eventually led to her appointment at Lipper, a Reuters company
that supplies mutual fund information and financial analysis. She took a summer
job at a Reuters subsidiary, and upon her graduation, its London office needed
someone to cover Spain. Her proficiency in Spanish won her the position, and
she has since been promoted to an analyst and manager, and is now back in the
US working in sales and account management.
Asked how her St. Lawrence education aids her in her work, she replies, “Writing.
I’m constantly in contact with clients … I received
very good input from professors at St. Lawrence, constructive criticism
and support. Having small classes and feeling comfortable participating
helps you gain confidence.”
She advises young alumni and future graduates to “Stick with
what you love and what you enjoy doing … Keep an open mind.
You’re not going to get through every interview with a 100%
success rate, but with a liberal arts education you can end up anywhere … Use
the confidence and communication skills that St. Lawrence gives you.”
During college, Kate held a position working with the men’s
basketball team. She was the Reunion Development
Chair for her class’s fifth reunion.
