Jennifer Curley Reichert ’90 created her
own path, in college and in her career.
Jennifer Curley of Clayton, NY, came to St. Lawrence unsure what
she wanted to study. “I wasn’t sure if I wanted
to be a government, psychology or English major,” she
says. “My first year, I tried courses in different areas
to see what I liked. I loved the fact that St. Lawrence allowed
me to do that.” A year later, Jennifer decided to major
in government and minor in sociology.
With one of her
government professors, she and other students created their own senior
seminar called “Voice, Identity and
Belief.” “Doing this allowed us not only to be
students, but also to be teachers,” she says. “It
gave us the chance to be creative and to show initiative and pursue
things we were interested in.”
When she left St. Lawrence, she worked with the late Senator Daniel
Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) in Washington, and also in the White House
for the Office of Protocol. Throughout the 1996 presidential
campaign, she worked closely with Tipper Gore, and afterwards, switched
career paths and began working for Edelman Public Relations, one
of the largest public relations firms in the world. It was
there that she worked closely with Microsoft, and realized she thoroughly
enjoyed working with technology companies and advising on their public
relations and government affairs.
In 2002, she began her own company in Washington, D.C. The Curley
Company’s
focus is to provide public affairs consulting for technology companies
and organizations. Her two employees are both graduates of
St. Lawrence.
“There’s something about the people at St. Lawrence,” she
says. “There’s a camaraderie there that is unique.
“St.
Lawrence gave me the skills and tools I use every day,” she
explains. “My experience at St. Lawrence, especially in developing
my own class senior year, empowered me to be entrepreneurial. It’s
something St. Lawrence instills in you; you can do anything you want.”
