A St. Lawrence education brought Greg Carvel
'93 two vital things
he needed to be a coach: the ability to communicate effectively,
and respect. It has paid off: he was recently named Assistant Coach
of the Ottawa Senators, in fall 2004.
At St. Lawrence, Greg was a Phi Beta
Kappa scholar, ATO brother,
a captain of Saints hockey,
and an Academic All-American hockey player. In four seasons at St.
Lawrence from 1989-90 to 1992-93, he recorded 124 points (37-87)
and 87 penalty minutes in 124 games, and was voted to the ECAC all-rookie
team and named best defensive forward in 1992-93. He was a government major who also minored in math.
Upon graduation he played first division professional hockey for
a year in Ostervala, Sweden – not your typical fresh-out-of-college
job. He spent two years with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American
Hockey League (AHL) as director of hockey operations.
He then earned
his master’s degree in sports management at
the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1996, while serving
as an assistant coach for the Amherst College hockey team. Finally,
he joined the staff of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in May 1999 as a
scouting co-ordinator. He eventually was promoted to a video coach,
and finally to assistant coach in August 2003. One of his mentors
left the team for Ottawa, and Carvel followed suit.
The advice he gives to students in achieving their goals, athletic
or otherwise, is this: “Make sure your heart is absolutely
in it. Realize it’s not a straight line to get to your goals – all
you can do is work hard and wait for opportunities to present themselves.”
Greg supports the St. Lawrence hockey program, and is going to participate
in SLU’s hockey camp. He has also done admissions interviews
and represented SLU in college fairs.
