In
a relatively short career, Anne Campbell ’98 has lobbied Congress,
proofread President George W. Bush’s speeches, and now has an
office in the Department of Education.
She moved to Washington, D.C. right after graduation (she earned a degree
in government and minored
in education) with three
friends – the only people she knew there – but she had a
pretty good idea what she was getting into. After all, she spent a semester
in Washington as an intern in the Department of Education, making
her well-prepared to take on the capital city.
Shortly after her arrival, Anne was hired by Shawn Smeallie
’81 as a lobbyist for American Continental Group, where
he is a partner and managing director; the firm’s main focus
is cost-effective corporate-government relations. Her hard
work there paid off. After three years, she was offered a
position in the West Wing of the White House, as a speechwriter. She
helped finalize and edit President Bush’s speeches, and ensured
that they remained true to the administration’s actual policies.
After holding that position for a year and a half, she became an executive
assistant in the Chief of Staff’s office, monitoring all incoming
policy proposals before they reached the President.
Now Anne is excited by her most recent move, to the Department of
Education, where she interned as a St. Lawrence student. Her new position
makes use of her studies in both education and government at St. Lawrence.
Soon, she will be helping implement the “No Child Left Behind
Act” in America ’s high schools. She leads a fast-paced
life, but that’s exactly how she likes it.
