Dr. Valerie Lehr received her Ph.D. from the
University of Maryland, College Park. Her area of research is the intersection
of political theory, feminist theory, and gay/lesbian/queer political activism.
She is the author of Queer Family Values: Debunking the Myth of the Nuclear
Family, published by Temple University Press in 1999. Her most recent
articles are: "Relationship Rights for a Queer Society," which will be published
in Child, Family, and State, edited by Stephen Macedo and Iris Marion
Young in December 2002 and “Framing an Alternative Rhetoric: How ‘Family
Values’ Harms the Left,” which will be published in Fundamental Differences:
Feminists Challenge the Right, edited by Cynthia Burack and Jyl Josephson
in June 2003. Dr. Lehr teaches courses focused on gender and politics
in the U.S., the family and politics in the U.S., gay and lesbian politics,
welfare policy in the U.S., and feminist political theory. She also teaches
in, and sometimes acts as coordinator for, the Gender Studies Program. In
1996, Dr. Lehr won the Maslow Award at St. Lawrence for "service to the student
body as a whole."
