As you may be aware, Dr. Bernard "Bernie" Lammers has recently retired from St. Lawrence University after 39 years of service in the government department.

Dr. Lammers received his Ph.D. from Columbia University and his J.D. from the University of Chicago. He served as both Professor of Public Law and Government and pre-law advisor at St. Lawrence and over the years counseled innumerable students in decisions about graduate studies, entrance to law school and/or entrance into positions of public service. Dr. Lammers' teaching fields included American political institutions, law and courts, Constitutional law, environmental law and politics, Congress and the legislative process, and U.S. Presidency. He also taught classic and modern political theory, comparative politics, and international law. In 1983 Dr. Lammers received the J. Calvin Keene Award, which recognizes a St. Lawrence University faculty member who best exemplifies the high standards of personal scholarship, effective teaching and moral concerns by which Dr. Keene conducted his personal and professional career. In May 2005, the graduating class of 2005 chose Dr. Lammers to receive the Owen D. Young Outstanding Professor Award, which was a fitting "capstone" to his teaching career.
In recognition of Dr. Lammers' extensive career and dedication to teaching and scholarship, the Bernard J. Lammers Award has been established, and through the generosity of family, friends, and colleagues, over $10,000 has already been donated. The Bernard J. Lammers Award will be presented to an upper-class government major who has demonstrated, either through course work or a research project, outstanding academic achievement in the study of government and who has the potential to substantially contribute in a future role within public administration, public policy, legal systems or academia. The annual prize will be presented to the recipient at Moving-Up Day.
St. Lawrence University would like to give selected alumni--government majors who benefited from the high caliber of teaching which Dr. Lammers provided--an opportunity to contribute to the Lammers Fund. In doing so, you will join in an effort to assist a St. Lawrence government major in moving ahead toward graduate studies, entrance to law school, and /or embarking on a career in public service. The Lammers Prize will also help to maintain a level of high academic achievement within the government department and to recognize achievement specifically related to public law and government on an ongoing basis. We hope alumni who once entered Hepburn Hall seeking both increased understanding of governmental systems and advice on personal career plans will choose to join us in honoring Bernie with a gift above and beyond their annual support of the St. Lawrence Fund.
The Lammers family is also offering a complimentary video copy of Bernie's 2005 Owen D. Young lecture to any interested alumna or alumnus who contributes to the Lammers Fund. Those of you who recall the Lammers trademark combination of wit and wisdom will appreciate Bernie's special remarks to the graduating Class of 2005 in addition to references to current national politics and international relations.
