Requirements for the Major
Fourteen courses are required for the major. They include 6 core courses
and 8 courses which provide for a comparative study of two regions
or cultural groups. The major encourages students to design a plan
around their own interests, in close consultation with a faculty advisor.
The concentration on two areas will culminate in a comparative senior
project. Students should plan carefully how they will incorporate
study abroad into their fulfillment of requirements and their pursuit
of research for the senior project. They should take the earliest
opportunity to consult with the Center for International and Intercultural
Studies about off-campus study and available research grants.
The 14 courses must be distributed as follows:
Global Studies 101 Introduction to Global Studies I:
Political Economy
Global Studies 102 Introduction to Global Studies II:
Race, Culture, and Identity
In these two courses, students will be introduced to major global
processes and phenomena such as cultural interaction, economic globalization,
environmental degradation, demographic transitions, geography, ecology,
representation, identity, signs and symbols, development-underdevelopment,
and the changing role of states.
Six (6) courses in two areas of concentration:
- Area of concentration 1: 3 courses
- Area of concentration 2: 3 courses

employ a comparative or transnational approach in their design.
