Why
We Give
Don Rose '64, Science Faculty
Member and Science Donor
Don Rose’64 of Palo Alto, CA, and his wife Sue have combined
outright giving for the St. Lawrence Fund and for the Science
Project with an irrevocable bequest gift to pledge to $3.4 million
toward St. Lawrence’s next comprehensive campaign.
"The quality of the education and the enthusiasm for science
that I attained at St. Lawrence were significant factors
in the successes I experienced throughout my career. I
can't think of a more satisfying way of sharing the fruits of those
successes than to help make St. Lawrence a more robust educational
institution," said Rose, who majored in physics as an
undergraduate.
North Country native Rose earned his doctorate at Stanford University
in 1971; his thesis concerned microchip superconductivity. This study
prepared him for a career in the development and manufacture of magnetic
and superconducting devices and magnetic bubble technology, significant
in the evolution of computer memory capacity, silicon-based chips and
operations management. He holds six patents and is credited with over
75 publications and presentations to technology, management, industry
and government forums.
Now retired, Rose has established five University Fellowships,
one in honor of his mother, Jennie Scott Rose, so that science and
mathematics students from his native North Country will have the
opportunities of discovery that he had. In spring 2004, he volunteered
as a visiting professor at St. Lawrence, teaching mathematics and
physics. He was awarded an Alumni Citation during Reunion
2004, and was elected to the Board of Trustees effective July
1, 2004.
Susan Rose earned a degree in business administration and worked as
a senior manager in finance and information technology in several Silicon
Valley high technology companies. Now retired, she is on the
board of the Peninsula Orchid Society and is currently serving as treasurer.
