Maximo
Perez ’07 of Greyneck, NY appreciates
having 24/7 access to a space that meets his needs. Thanks
to renovations to the offices and student study spaces in Whitman
Hall, funded by Bob and Mary Wortmann, P’06, of Upper Saddle
River, NJ, and Robert and Sally Gioia P’05 of Buffalo, NY.
Max can find the quiet atmosphere he needs to concentrate on reading
for his speech
and theatre and sociology double major, and find a community
of fellow students who understand and share his needs for such
an atmosphere.
St. Lawrence has a thriving program for students with special
learning needs, such as dyslexia or Attention Deficit Disorder,
and its director, John Meagher, is respected nationwide for his
support of students who have the aptitude and the attitude to success,
but may go about their pursuit of their studies in ways that work
differently than other students.
The renovations, says Max, “give us a chance to support each
other.” Before the work was completed, Whitman had a
very small number of carrels and other study spaces, so few people
could use them. Now, with many more options, the students can form
a community that encourages its members to succeed.
“I probably wrote 600 pages this past fall in the Whitman
space,” says Max. “I was there two-fours a day,
every day of the week so I got a lot accomplished.”
