Why We Give
Harold Johnson '51

Following a long and distinguished career in academics and government, Harold S. Johnson '51 wanted to create a legacy at his alma mater, one that would assist students with whom he shares a heritage.

In 2006, Johnson established the Harold Johnson '51 Scholarship Fund, supporting students with financial need who are from the area where he grew up, Erie County, NY. A native of Hamburg, near Buffalo, Johnson earned his St. Lawrence degree in government, followed by a master's degree from Syracuse University, and the Ph.D. and Master of Public Policy from the University of Michigan. He began his career in student services at Syracuse, later becoming a political science professor and teaching at Mankato State College, Wayne State University, Canisius Collge and Michigan State University. In 1987, he became an economist for the Department of Labor Statistics in Wahington, DC, a position from which he retired in 1997.

As an undergraduate, Johnson was active in the Forensic Society, Debate Club, the leadership honorary Omicron Delta Kappa, Mummers and student publications The Hill News and The Laurentian. He's been active as an alumnus as well, frequently attending Reunions on campus and events in Washington area.

Asked why he chose to give back to his alma mater in the form of a scholarship, Johnson said, "The enriching legacy of St. Lawrence University resonates in its alumni. As each of us should maximize our potential, the University remains a significant mentor. I anticipate that an important share of my personal legacy will rest in the Laurentians I co-sponsor, anticipating their leadership in broadening society's future options.  I thank the University for its selection of Stephen Dally '10 for my initial sponsorship."
