Beneficiaries of Support
“This
scholarship has been, by far, one of the best things to happen to
me while attending St. Lawrence,” says Candina
Harmer '07, the O’Connell Family Scholarship recipient. “With
the help of this scholarship from the O’Connells, I have been
able to attend St. Lawrence, enjoy the beautiful Adirondack Mountains
here in upstate New York, become a member of the Laurentian
Singers,
and meet so many kind people I may not have had the chance to do,” she
says.
Candina comes to St. Lawrence fro Phoenix, NY, and she graduated
form John C. Birdlebough High School. She’s majoring in biology
with a minor in music,
andkeeps very active not only with the Laurentian Singers, but also
with the SLU Buddies program, the Association
for Campus Entertainment, the Student Safety Team and as an
EMT with the Canton Resque Squad. She has been named as a McNair
Scholar, which provides funding and support for Candina to
prepare for doctoral work after her St. Lawrence graduation. She hoes
to earn either an MD or Ph.D.
“I would love the chance to thank the O’Connells, in
person, for their generous gift to me. I would like to be able to
show them what their gift has allowed me to do, not only in the St.
Lawrence community, but in the Canton community as well. It is indeed
through kind acts of alumni, such as the O’Connells, that some
students are given the chance to truly make a difference here at
St. Lawrence. I would have to say to any alumni that the giving you
may do truly impacts the future of America here at St. Lawrence,” said
Candina.
Candina knows something about legacy; she is at least the seventh person
in her family to attend St. Lawrence.
