Why We Give
Jim ’75 and Cathy ’75 Crandell are paying forward a
vote of confidence. “When St. Lawrence admitted us, it
gave us a resounding vote of confidence by declaring that
the University believed in us and by offering us the unique opportunity
to grow and learn in the nurturing environment of a small, liberal
arts college,” says the couple, who live Chatham, NJ.
Although they did not receive financial aid, the Crandells understand
that their education was funded in part through the generous
gifts of alumni who closed the gap between the charged
tuition and the actual cost of college. And they knew many students
who did receive financial aid to enable them to attend SLU. “Now
that we are in a position to contribute to St. Lawrence, we want
to return the favor so that present and future students will benefit
from those unique opportunities because we BELIEVE in St.
Lawrence,” they say.
The Crandalls praise the work of President Daniel F. Sullivan and
the team who work with him. “As President, he quickly
went to work tailoring a master plan to ensure that the University
would remain competitive and would attract highly qualified students. During
his tenure, President Sullivan and his staff have created,
implemented, and labored to make the dream for St. Lawrence a reality!” they
say. “When we make a donation to St. Lawrence, we know
that our gift will be well spent because we have seen the results
with our own eyes and have shared the enthusiasm of fellow Laurentians
about our alma mater.”
